Conference Tourism Flourishing in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, April 26, 2023 — Tourism for conferences in Ethiopia has flourished over the last nine months due to effective measures implemented by the government, according to Planning and Development State Minister Bereket Fesehatsion.

Over the past nine months, Ethiopia has welcomed more than 60 large-scale conferences, which marks a considerable rise from the number recorded during the corresponding period last year.

According to the state minister, this increase can be linked to governmental efforts such as the "Dine for Nation" program aimed at enhancing conference facilities along with boosting tourism infrastructure and attractions.

The "Dine for Nation" initiative launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed aims to enhance tourism by upgrading the appeal and amenities of travel spots while also showcasing distinct cultural assets and touristic features internationally.

Bereket mentioned that Ethiopian Airlines, being the biggest carrier in Africa, has significantly contributed to acting as a central hub for the continent. This strategic position is notably boosting conference tourism specifically and enhancing Ethiopia's overall tourism sector generally.

The state minister mentioned that steps were taken to effectively use the well-known airline's potential for boosting Ethiopia’s tourism industry over the specified time frame.

It has been observed that conference tourism has notably increased and broadened over the last nine months, spurred by the emergence of new tourist spots and conference venues.

Ethiopia has been the host for several global events such as the 46th Regular General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the African Ministerial Conference on Defence.

Being home to both the African Union’s central office and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Ethiopia remains a hub where numerous regional, continental, and global conferences take place.

The state minister noted that the nation recently held a smoothly run African Union Summit where all relevant parties actively took part. They emphasized that the hospitable and friendly welcome extended to the delegates received high praise, which plays an important role in enhancing the country’s image and boosting its profile internationally.
