Starlink and DStv Pay "Peasant Prices" to Operate in Nigeria, Minister Says

Uche Nnaji, the minister for Innovation, Science, and Technology, stated that the federal government is looking into ways to address the increasing misuse of satellite technology. He expressed concern over how companies like Starlink, DStv, and several others contribute very little financially despite their operations in Nigeria.

He says that certain foreign investors sometimes manage to circumvent the system, thereby preventing the government from collecting required revenues.

The minister disclosed this information during a stakeholders' workshop on space regulation organized by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in Abuja.

Speaking to those present, Nnaji emphasized that effective management of space could enhance revenues as well as significantly reduce the increasing activities of pipeline saboteurs, insurgents, and criminal organizations.

He stated, "In the coming years, we aim to transition from a $1 trillion economy to a $5 trillion one. This growth will be facilitated by our new space regulations and licensing framework. Companies like Starlink along with others such as DSTV plan to enter our market; however, some may offer minimal payments that could potentially exploit Nigerians. Addressing these issues will be an integral part of our proposed space regulatory measures and licenses."

You can rest assured that based on statements made by the Director-General of NASRDA regarding our capabilities, the agency anticipates an annual budget exceeding N200 billion, with an expected increase of 18-20 percent each year. This is merely one example of the various initiatives being launched.

Nnaji continued, stating that the days when satellite pay-TV or radio would lose signals during rainstorms will soon be over.

The minister mentioned that they found out certain service providers are not functioning within the correct frequency ranges, which leads to signal loss whenever the weather changes.

All these issues with your TV or radio malfunctioning or losing signals during rain occur due to DSTV and similar services not operating their equipment at the appropriate bandwidth. Instead, they opt for a lower bandwidth to avoid spending money on higher capacity.

“However, through this new regulation, we will compel them to adjust it to its proper position. By doing so, you’ll avoid all issues related to loss of signal when rain begins. This is just one aspect of the numerous reforms currently underway thanks to the exceptional leadership of Dr. Olumide Adepoju.”
