Rangers Aim to Revive Season in Fed Cup Clash
Rangers International FC hopes to rescue their underwhelming 2024/25 campaign by claiming the Federation Cup following another disheartening home defeat, this time at the hands of Enyimba, in the intense Oriental rivalry match. PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The 2-1 loss at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium recorded Rangers' sixth home defeat of the season, making it their poorest performance in the league compared to other teams. Even clubs like Lobi Stars, which were relegated due to having only five home losses, fared better than them.
Captain Chinemerem Ugwueze acknowledged that a weak beginning to the match significantly impacted their team, stating, "I feel we had a subpar start today. Our performance suffered because we didn’t begin well," Ugwueze explained.
Before we managed to return to the match, we found ourselves already trailing by two goals, which truly required our very best efforts, I have to admit.
Ugwueze encouraged the supporters to redirect their attention towards the Federation Cup, acknowledging it as the team's final opportunity for achievement this campaign.
“I believe our sole remaining hope at this point is the FA Cup, and so far, we've excelled in it," he said. "Rather than dwell on the defeat, it's crucial that we concentrate on what we can accomplish instead."
The Rangers are scheduled to compete against Plateau United in the Federation Cup quarterfinals in Abuja on May 3rd. This same club previously caused an upset with a home loss for the Enugu-based team. Despite this, Ugwueze maintains his positive outlook, saying, "Given how well we've been performing in the FA Cup, I have full confidence in our squad."
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu supported his captain's views, expressing disappointment over the team's challenges but highlighting the significance of ending the season on a high note.
"Frankly, it's incredibly hard to convey how challenging it is for the defending champions to barely secure a top-four position. Even making the top three seems out of reach. This situation is extremely disheartening," Ilechukwu confessed.
In spite of the squad's injury issues and frequent player rotations lately, Ilechukwu remains optimistic about their chances against Plateau United, stating, "The odds are fifty-fifty. We believe firmly that victory is ours. Our spirits remain high."
We will use every technical means available to tackle this problem and instill confidence in the boys.
