China Calls Up Brazil-Born Star for Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

China has added Brazil-born midfielder Serginho to their team for critical World Cup qualifying matches, just days after he acquired Chinese citizenship.

In recent years, China's underperforming national team has joined other nations by recruiting naturalized players, though this strategy hasn't significantly improved their outcomes.

Also included in Branko Ivankovic's 27-player roster is Tyias Browning, a defender who once played for England's youth teams and was born in Liverpool but is now known as Jiang Guangtai.

Serginho, who goes by Sai Erjiniao in China, became a citizen on March 12 and made his debut with the national team during a behind-closed-doors match against Kuwait on Sunday, as reported by state media outlet CCTV.

The individual, who was born as Sergio Oliveira, has been playing in China since 2020 at the age of 30.

China will play against Saudi Arabia away on Thursday and then host Australia at home on the following Tuesday as they compete to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup in North America.

They sit at the bottom of their group with six points, trailing only Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain on goal difference. Australia is just one point above them. In contrast, Japan leads the group with 16 points.

The first and second places will advance directly, whereas the third and fourth positions will move into an additional qualification stage.

Serginho started his professional journey with the Brazilian team Santos, then transferred to Japan’s Kashima Antlers in 2018.

In 2020, he signed with Changchun Yatai, where he netted 30 times across 100 matches, and then departed for Beijing Guoan, one of their competitors in the Chinese Super League, in February.

Teenagers Wang Yudong and Liu Chengyu have been chosen for the team picked by the Croatian coach Ivankovic.

Elkeson, Alan, and Fernandinho, Brazilian-born athletes who frequently played for China, did not make it into the most recent team roster.

China ranks 90th globally and has only made one appearance at the World Cup, which was in 2002; during this event, they did not manage to secure a single point or score a goal.
