On April 28, at Goaso in the Ahafo Region, GNA - The staff turnover at the Goaso Municipal Hospital within the Ahafo Region is alarming as 59 highly skilled professionals including specialists and senior nurses have departed from this medical center seeking better opportunities overseas. This information was disclosed by Dr. James Ankomah, who serves as the hospital’s Medical Superintendent.
During an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) conducted in Goaso, Dr. Ankomah characterized the circumstances as concerning and partially blamed it on the inadequate terms of service for employees.
He stated that issues such as low motivation levels, inadequate pay, and expensive housing costs should be addressed promptly to maintain the engagement of healthcare workers in the region.
Dr. Ankomah noted that many hospital employees and healthcare providers used a significant portion of their modest earnings for rent, which added financial strain to their lives. He urged the government to build housing units and also enhance the working conditions and compensation for these professionals.
During an associated interview, Dr. Akosua Owusu-Sarpong, who serves as the Ahafo Region Director of Health Services, informed the GNA that the government might consider entering into a Public-Private Partnership agreement to supply housing for healthcare personnel.
She requested modern medical devices and equipment as well, particularly ventilators for the ICU at the hospital, mentioning that the area needed regional medical storage facilities too.
